Hospitalito Atitlán Board of Directors Asociación K’aslimaal
K’aslimaal (life in the T’zutujil language) is a grassroots organization formed in 2003 for the express purpose of reopening the Hospitalito Atitlán. This Guatemalan Non-Governmental Organization is a registered non-profit association. The charter members of K’aslimaal include:

President Francisco Sojuel, retired after 20 years as the administrator of the Health Department in Santiago Atitlán. He and his wife, Argentina, founded ADISA, a center for children with disabilities. In 2005, Francisco was elected Treasurer of Guatemala’s National Counsel for the Attention of Handicapped Persons (CONADI). Francisco is an active member of Santiago Atitlán’s Search and Rescue Squad and serves on the Board of Asociación Cojolya, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of weaving on the backstrap loom.

Dr. Juan Manuel Chuc is the Medical Director of Hospitalito Atitlán. He began his medical career at the Clinica Santiguito in Panabaj. He served as Medical Director of Rxiin Tnamit, a health and education clinic in the center of town. Dr. Chuc is the President of Santiago Atitlán’s Search and Rescue Squad. Over his thirteen year career, Dr. Chuc has gained the confidence and respect of the entire community. The father of two, Dr. Chuc is also an aspiring saxophone player.

Juan Tziná Sosof is Health Commissioner of the Municipalidad de Santiago Atitlán and First Counsel to the Mayor. In 2003, he joined the civic committee K’aslimaal and made a tremendous contribution to the successful renovation of the Panabaj facility. Juan now serves on the Commission of Construction for the new Hospitalito Atitlán in Xut Chaaj.

Diego Chichóm Ramírez is Commissioner of the Environment for the Municipalidad de Santiago Atitlán and is the Second Counsel to the Mayor. Diego was very active in the renovations in Panabaj and the aftermath of the disaster. Diego is active in the preservation of cultural traditions in the community.

Lyn Dickey has served as Treasurer of Asociación K’aslimaal since it’s founding in 2003. Lyn sold her small business in Eureka Springs, Arkansas and moved to Santiago Atitlán in 2002. Lyn’s roles include coordination of the renovation and construction activities, Financial Comptroller for the Board of Directors and chief photographer.

Karina Bergstresser is a founding member and Secretary of Asociación K’aslimaal. Karina studied journalism in Göteborg, Sweden and has lived in Santiago Atitlán for over seven years. Karina served for one year in the Cofradia Santa Cruz which attends to the religious and cultural traditions of the Maya T’zutujil.

Kathy Searle de Acevedo is Co-Secretary of Asociación K’aslimaal. Kathy first arrived in Guatemala in the early 70’s as a Peace Corp Volunteer. She has developed a career as a Specialist in Non-formal Education, with extensive experience in Latin America and assignments throughout the world.
