In 2004, K’aslimaal received a 50 year lease from the town of Santiago Atitlán to renovate the abandoned Hospital buildings in Panabaj. After extensive renovations, the Hospitalito Atitlan began offering 24 hr. care in April 2005. Five months later, a mudslide from Tropical Storm Stan destroyed the community of Panabaj, killing hundreds of our neighbors and closing the Hospitalito, once again. (for more indepth History)

Within 15 days, the Asociación K’aslimaal completed the conversion of a backpacker’s hotel into a temporary medical facility. Immediately the Hospitalito provided free care to the victims of the mudslides. With the assistance of medical volunteers, K’aslimaal quickly developed the capacity to provide much needed medical services for the community – 24 hr. emergency care, inpatient beds, elective and emergency surgical services. New donations of medical equipment enhanced our capacity to diagnose and treat patients from this T’zutujil Maya community.
