Tragedy and Road to Recovery in Panabaj, Guatemala with Dr. Irene Quiejú.
Last October marked the first anniversary of Hurricane Stan and the mudslides that buried village of Panabaj. Pueblo a Pueblo organized a speaking tour for Dr. Irene Quiejú around the anniversary. She delivered a presentation about her experiences as the Medical Director of the Hospitalito Atitlán and the hurricane. Dr. Quiejú also discussed her experiences during Guatemala’s bloody civil war and how she realized her dream of becoming a doctor. Dr. Irene Quiejú was the Medical Director of the Hospitalito Atitlán. She was born in Santiago Atitlán. Her parents had 12 children, but only six survived infancy. She is the first female T’zutujil Mayan physician from this town of over 40,000 people. |
