Programs
At Pueblo a Pueblo, we know that only education, decent health care, and good nutrition can break poverty's grip on the Mayan children of Guatemala. We develop strong relationships with the people in the region where we work, creating lasting change by empowering the community to plan, participate in, and eventually take control of their own programs. Our Child Health and Education Scholarships and Sponsorships, and our Maternal Child Health Sponsorship program integrate health and education for infants, mothers, and primary school children.
In addition, our School Health and Nutrition Program combines several projects targeting specific needs:
- Poor school attendance: Our school nutrition project provides healthy school lunches to primary school students in the region, encouraging parents to send their children to school and preventing chronic malnutrition.
- Malnutrition: Through organic school gardens we teach children—and by extension their families and community—how to grow their own healthy food. This gives them the skills they need to start their own family vegetable gardens and to incorporate healthy food into their daily diet.
- Diarrheal diseases: Our Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project ensures schools have access to clean water and sanitation facilities in addition to training teachers to incorporate hygiene lessons in their daily activities. This ensures children stay clean and healthy and thus less susceptible to life-threatening diarrheal diseases.
- Another important component of our programming is our children's library and literacy program which awakens and grows children's interest in reading, and offers a place to continue learning during the school break periods.
