Isabela and Magdalena spend time after school to practice reading.
Although the the Guatemalan school year is winding down and in three weeks students will be on vacation, our Primary Education Scholarship (PES) Project beneficiary students are still working hard and attending tutoring lessons after school.

As you may remember from our
previous blog post about our tutoring services, tutoring lessons are led by Isabela Chichom, our Project Tutor. She offers individualized attention to students struggling in -Spanish language and literacy, math, and science.

“We try to make it fun for them, we play math games, language games, we go outside and teach them different studying techniques,” Isabella says.

This week we asked a few of our PES students at Chukmuk Primary School:

What are you doing in tutoring today?

Today in tutoring: “I’m going to practice reading comprehension in Spanish. I get confused a lot when I’m reading, so I’m going to practice reading out loud and talking about what I read with Ms. Isabela.“

Today in tutoring: “I have homework today, so I’m going to work on my addition worksheet.”
Picture
Maria Isabel rewrites her notes and makes new charts for her information
Name: Maria Isabel
Grade: 5

Favorite subject: Math “It’s really easy for me to understand, I really don’t like Art class though.”

Today in tutoring: “In Biology class we’re learning about the five kingdoms of life. I’m going to go over my notes with Ms. Isabel and try to make charts that make more sense than the book.”

The goal of the Primary Education Scholarship Project is to help students succeed in the classroom. Sometimes that means working with and encouraging kids after school.

“A lot of kids realize, halfway through the tutoring session, that they are actually able to learn and understand the material, and then they are more confident in class,” Isabela explained.

Healthy Kids are Ready to Learn

At Pueblo a Pueblo, we know that healthy kids are ready to learn. For this reason, our Primary Education Scholarships, or PES, program provides free emergency care and yearly checkups to the beneficiaries.

“Parents come to these visits and mention that their child is not sick, but they are very tired and it is hard for them to focus in school.” Johanny Quieju, the PES program manager, believes that the program’s yearly doctor visits are crucial for the success of the students. “Through the yearly medical checkup they can see if they have a vitamin deficiency or parasites, and they can receive the medicine and vitamins they need to do better in school” she explains.

During the month of June, 88 PES beneficiaries received their annual checkups.

Johanny attended the checkups to provide support and Spanish to Tz’utujil translation services between the doctor and beneficiaries.

The visits begin with a consultation on how the child is feeling, if there have been any health concerns, and questions about the beneficiaries’ overall health. Afterwards, the children receive a physical exam during which many children giggle as they get weighed and shiver from the cold of the stethoscope.

The generosity of sponsors like you make these yearly checkups possible. Access to annual health visits provides the opportunity to address any potential health issues as well as track the health of the beneficiaries so they can take full advantage of the PES program. Because, healthy kids are ready to learn.

Building on Success

After classes end for the day at Chukmuk Primary School, a small group of students circle back to the library for an afternoon filled with games, stories, and puzzles. “Today is tutoría day!” (tutoring day) exclaims Maria Isabela, a fourth grade student.

Last month, our Primary Education Scholarships Project officially launched tutoring sessions for the 2017 school year. Although the scholarships project began in 2006, our team added the tutoring component in 2016.

Students are greeted by a sign that says "bienvenidos" (welcome) as they enter the classroom
In communities throughout rural Guatemala, children face many barriers to a good education. There are limited school resources, overcrowded classrooms, and under trained teachers. With difficult economic conditions and underfunded schools, struggling students are often left behind. The result is persistent illiteracy, high grade repetition, and low levels of schooling (ENCOVI).

“Through our monitoring and evaluation results, and our meetings with teachers, we realized that some of our sponsored students needed a little more support in class,” explained Johanny Quieju, the project manager. “That’s when we began to develop one-on-one tutoring services.”

“When students fall behind in class, schools here don’t have the resources to support these children. Students then stop attending school, or even drop out,” Johanny adds. Students in our Primary Education Scholarships Project get individualized attention from Isabela Chichom, Pueblo a Pueblo’s Project Tutor.

Isabela leads a tutoring session focused on Spanish
Currently, Pueblo a Pueblo offers tutoring services in three subjects--Spanish, math, and science, for students between fourth and fifth grades. This year, 11 sponsored students are enrolled in the tutoring sessions at Chukmuk and Panabaj Primary Schools.

“I feel like I’m doing well in tutoría,
” says Franco Ramirez, fourth grader at Chukmuk Primary School. “Whenever I don’t understand something, I can ask Ms. Isabela for help. I feel more confident in class now.”

For Isabela Chichom, she’s encouraged by the development of Pueblo a Pueblo’s tutoring sessions. “We’re excited to see tutoría grow over the next few years, so that more students can get the support they need to succeed.”
