Family planning is not a common practice in rural Guatemala. In fact, it’s a taboo topic that rarely gets talked about in Guatemalan society in general, but our Family Planning Champions project has been breaking barriers by bringing awareness about the importance of family planning to the indigenous women in our communities.

In June, Pueblo a Pueblo’s first participants in the Champions project became the teachers as they began organizing and leading conversations with their neighbors, friends and relatives on topics like reproductive health, pregnancy spacing, and parenting responsibilities. They are educating women on the types of contraceptives available to them. Recently, they started bringing kits to illustrate the differences between the various methodologies.

For our Champions, family planning is an important topic that needs to be discussed with the younger generation. Concepcion, an older woman with eight children, told us that she decided to become a Champion to educate young adults on the reproductive options available to them. “I didn’t know anything about these topics,” she told us, “and I wish I did because I had a lot of children and now we are less financially stable, some of my children are very ill, others are not able to go to school, and life is more complicated.”

Other women decided to become Champions because they have used a family planning method, and it has benefited their families in terms of health, economics, and the wellbeing of the children they have chosen to have.

The Champions hope that the education they provide to the women in their communities will translate to action and to empowerment in the conversations they have with their spouses, families and friends.  And many of their efforts have already been successful as five new women started using a family planning method in the month of June as a result of their conversations with the Champions.

We are proud of everyone involved in the Family Planning Champions project. We know that they will continue to champion change in their communities.
