Beekeeping Project Expands into Huehuetenango

In early 2013, Pueblo a Pueblo initiated its first ever Beekeeping Project in  the Lake Atitlán region with the objective of helping rural coffee-growing families gain another source of sustainable income via beekeeping and honey production. In rural communities in Central America, many smallholder farmers and their families rely on coffee cultivation as their sole source of income. Without access to diversified income sources, coffee families in the region face persistent economic insecurity, food scarcity and undernourishment.

The project supported farmers in producing close to 250lbs of honey last year – an amount which nearly tripled to over 700lbs harvested in 2015. With continued training and expansion, we predict even greater production in 2016! This success has motivated Pueblo a Pueblo to expand its beekeeping project and it’s doing just that in the more mountainous terrain of Huehuetenango.

This year, we are partnering with Union Hand Roasted, a UK coffee roasting company, who purchases specialty coffee from La Cooperativa Integral de Ahorro y Credito Esquipulas. Through this partnership, Pueblo a Pueblo and Union Hand Roasted will pilot a beekeeping project with one of the cooperative’s producer groups, whose members consists solely of women.

“It is exciting to work with a cooperative and begin setting up a platform for where the project could go in the future,” says Pueblo a Pueblo program manager, Michelle Sims. “Not only is there support from us, but also the cooperative. We see a lot of potential for growth in the future.”

This is the first project expansion for Pueblo a Pueblo that is outside the Sololá department. Our staff has already visited the participating members to provide extensive theoretical training behind the commitments of beekeeping. Looking forward to the next couple of months, they will install hives and provide a week-long training on honey production and product marketing. “I am excited about bringing the experience of the project we have in Atitlán to Huehuetenango. I feel like we are in a good place to implement it in a new area.”
